One of the biggest purchases you can make these days is a new car. It is extremely important as it needs to take you where you want to go. Because of this we need to remember to give it the proper TLC and keep it operating in tip top shape. Lots of times accidents happen just because someone lacked proper maintenance on their vehicle. Most of the time these could of been easily prevented. Some of this maintenance is very routine and can be preformed by anyone, not just a mechanic.

A car that is well taken care of is a car that will last longer. You benefit in a lot of ways when you do routine checks, including better gas mileage, cleaner emissions, and extended tire life to name a few. Checking up your car often will also result in finding small problems before they become very big and very expensive ones. If you keep up with this preventive maintenance these problems can be found and repaired keeping your repair costs low.

What makes for the best car check up routine? Here are a few items to go over.

Keep it simple. A quick look into your owners manual or maintenance book will tell you the proper intervals for oil changes, tune ups, and other things.

The engine oil should be changed ever 3000 mileage or 3 months whichever is first. Modern vehicles specify greater intervals but doing it early will never hurt.

Check fluid levels for several different applications weekly. Check your oil, brake fluid, transmission and power steering fluid, overflow tank and radiator fluid every week. Check to see that you have enough windshield washing solution or water every week, too. Take a few minutes to top off any fluids that are low.

Tire pressure should be checked often as well. A tire that is under inflated can cause poor fuel economy and be dangerous. A over inflated tire is no good either. Check factory specs.

Tires should also be checked for wear patterns, “too worn” tread, cracks, tacks or nails. Tacks or nails could be causing slow leaks, and you should also make sure hubcaps and lug nuts are secure.

Schedule regular maintenance for your car. A problem in the fuel delivery or ignition system could cause a great reduction in fuel economy. Sometimes it may seem like a good idea to push back your tune ups and lots of people do especially if their vehicle is running good, but don’t! Take your car to your professional technician so that it is properly inspected and and problems can be found.

A well lubed chassis is very important. A good shop like Riverview Service center in Elmwood Park NJ will lube your suspension as part of the oil change service.

Your cars battery is the heart of the electrical system. Make sure you check it regularly and pay special attention to the cables and terminals. Corrosion that has built up can be cleaned off with a wire brush. Make sure you have a good tight connection to prevent what may seem like a dead battery.

Change your windshield wiper blades at least once a year and inspect them monthly for cracks or other problems. Use a protective coating such as Rain-X on your windshield every 2 weeks. This increases your viewing ability on days when heavy rain is a problem.

Be certain to check out your lighting systems. A burned out bulb can cause a accident and nobody wants that to happen. Replace burned out bulbs as soon as possible.

If you will follow these tips concerning car maintenance you will soon notice that the checks become second nature. A little pro-active care for your car can keep your vehicle looking better, performing better, and you will also be able to keep it on the road longer.

Are you aware that every air compressor cannot be used for every kind of job? Air compressors differ both in power level and in size. If you want to get an estimate what kind of air compressor you’ll need, first check the air tool that you’re using for its power requirements. After that, all you need to do is pick a compressor that’s a bit more powerful than you think you need. That way, if you want to you can later buy an air tool that requires a slightly higher level of power.

For example, one common air tool is the rotary screw compressor. When looking for a rotary screw compressor, you are faced with an array of choices. If you want a powerful screw compressor, don’t choose a cheap one. Those are only good for occasionally pumping up your tires with air.

Air compressors are sometimes rated by horsepower or hp. Dont be swayed by the hp listing. It all depends on how much power it draws. Often the hp listed is inflated.

A better value to look at is the PSI. This means pounds per square inch. Most air tools need 90 PSI to function. But if the compressor has a listing of 125 to 135 PSI, it will not be able to properly run the 90 PSI air tool. This is because what the PSI is really measuring is shut off pressure, and that value does not account when there is a loss of pressure in the line. If you want to get the best efficiency from your 90 PSI tool, think about a compressor that has two-stage pressure shut off. The first stage will shut off at 90 PSI, and the second stage will wait until 175 PSI to shut off.

Next you will take into account the “cubic feet per minute” or CFM. The majority of air tools manufactured today will require 4 to 6 CFM. Not a big deal here, since at 90 PSI you will be getting 3 to 4 exact horsepower. CFM merely tells you how much air is being moved.

Tank size on a compressor may be important to you depending on how you wish to use your air compressor. If your work requires you to use it in short bursts, then the typical 30-gallon tank and a normal pump and motor is more than fine. If however, you wish to use it heavily, you would do better with a bigger tank and much stronger pump and motor, taking into consideration air that is stored in the tank.

Because of this you may see professional contractors running multiple air tools at the same time, with the knowledge that using a compressor with a rating of 150 PSI is a better choice for long-term continual use.

Truck mounted compressors differ from portable ones because they use the truck itself as a source of power. Of course a problem with this is a fact that the truck has to keep running to keep the compressor going. If you need to keep the compressor in use for long periods of time, the best choice is a compressor that is deck mounted. Deck mounted compressors are similar to truck mounted ones in that they sit on removable beds for the truck. This makes it feasible to let the compressor stay at the worksite instead of forcing you to lug it every day.

There are gas powered and electrically powered compressors. If you are apt to work in an area without having electricity its imperative that you choose a gas powered one.

Traveling by car is a great way to see a country at home as well as abroad. However, when it comes to car insurance, there are a number of issues that you should be aware of before you embark on your trip. When driving a car, you need to be protected for many types of car issues that may arise.

If you are visiting friends or family and you want to use their car, it is important to know if you are covered. To be safe, you can purchase short term car insurance. If a car problem occurs, it will not affect the car owners insurance policy. You can obtain short term insurance for as little as a day or more, as long as it does not extend past one year. If you are renting a car, you have to make sure that you understand what you are covered for and if there are any restrictions. If your rental car receives damage which you are deemed responsible, the rental car company will try to collect any financial damages from your car insurance company or from you if your insurance provider will not pay.

All car rental companies will offer insurance to their customers. It is important to check to see what their coverage includes. As well, you should also check with your credit card company to find out if they provide coverage and the details of this coverage. If you are planning to rent a car, you should give the name and licenses of anyone who will be driving the car. As well, tell them if you are planning to drive the car out of the state.

If you are planning on driving a rental car out of the country, you should check to see if you car insurance provider will provide coverage. If not, you should check your credit card companys policy. If your insurance does not transfer internationally, you should obtain complete coverage through the rental car company or obtain short term car insurance. International rental car companies may offer optional theft and vandalism insurance coverage for the car rental. When securing insurance for a rental car, you should have liability. The best way to find out if what you are covered for when renting a car is to call you vehicle insurance provider. As well, call and ask your credit card company about the type of coverage they provide for a car rental. When acquiring insurance for international rentals, you should have liability, collision, theft, and medical coverage.

If you are driving a company car, you should learn about the car insurance quote and coverage provided. If your employer does not tell you, you should ask the insurance company. It is important to know about liability, theft, vandalism, and collision. As well, you should find out if the companys insurance covers others if they drive the car and if you are covered if you leave the state.

When you are driving within your own country or abroad, it is important to know that you are protected in all driving situations. It will give you peace of mind knowing that if something happens, you will have assistance from an insurance provider.

by Mark Carter

A good car body shop has the equipment and knowledge necessary to repair car frames and exteriors. It may be difficult at first to tell one car body shop from another.

Sometimes a car body shop is more concerned with making money than fixing your vehicle. You must investigate several qualities to find the best body shop for your needs. Equipment and facilities are only two of the things that you need to look for in a body shop.

Car Body Specialty

A car body shop exclusively repairs and rebuilds the external body of a car. Your body shop must be experienced in collision, paint and frame repair. Each collision is different as are the vehicles involved. Repair jobs are delicate matters, so it is very important to choose the right car body shop that is professional and can handle your car body repair in a respectable amount of time.

Specific Areas of Skill

A usual car body shop will charge hundreds and thousands for repainting an entire vehicle. Other services like body kit re-installation, classic car repair and restoration of body modifications require just as much expertise. You want to be sure that they are also using top of the line paint and other products to complete your repair work.

Insurance Issues

Insurance repairs should come with free estimates. Insurance repairs must be dealt with by qualified car body repair experts. Car body shop employees need to have a lot of experience dealing with insurance claims or they could cause you a lot of grief.

Choose Wisely

If your vehicle has been damaged in an accident or collision, find an actual body shop rather than just any available repair shop. A quality car body shop will have both manufacturers’ and insurance companies’approval.

A car body shop that has proper equipment and experience will better guarantee that your car body repair is done properly. A quality car body shop is an important part of getting your car repaired once and for all and putting this major inconvenience behind you for good.

by Pete Roberts

As gas prices continue to escalate you may be looking for ways on how to improve gas mileage. If you are finding ways to improve gas mileage or increase fuel efficiency there are many do it yourself solutions that you should consider as part of your standard vehicle maintenance.

A tune up could get you better gas mileage up to 20% or even more if a bad oxygen sensor is discovered. This is an extreme example but if your engine is idling roughly or hesitating and spiting smoke out the muffler then you should and get a engine diagnostic tune up and this could increase gas mileage and possibly extend the life of your engine saving hundreds or thousands of dollars in maintenance.

Checking your tire pressure could save money. Some people overlook this maintenance and it is best checked monthly. By keeping your tires at recommended pressure as outlined in your owners manual you can get better gas mileage of 2-3%. The net results is you could save hundreds of dollars of more because when your tires are inflated properly it also extends the life of your tires.

Driving habits can have a real adverse affect on mileage. Driving habits can be finding the shortest way home or the route that is the most direct and has the least amount of stops along the way. If you have been asking yourself how to get better gas mileage this is a big factor. Find an online mapping service that shows you direct routes.

Do you use your vehicle or car trunk as a storage unit? By eliminating every 100lbs in your vehicle you could be increasing gas mileage by a percentage point. Many people are so extreme in this extra weight that they may only keep their gas tank partially filled to reduce weight. Gas weighs about 6.1 pounds per gallon at room temperature. If your are deciding on how to increase gas mileage there are many solutions to help help improve gas mileage.

It can be hard to find the perfect auto repair shop that you can really trust, because of that most people find themselves spending more money by just going to their dealership for repairs. The thing is, most of the time they will charge you more, and the wait will be longer. Here are some tips so that you can know what to look for in a good auto repair shop.

Look for an auto repair shop that has great communication and customer service. It can be frustrating to go to a company that doesn?t communicate very well with you what is going on with your car. You need to know that the auto repair shop has great customer service.

One of the great things about the Internet is that it offers great recommendations for different repair shops right where you live. You can find out a lot about a repair shop by looking through reviews on them.

When you slowly narrow down your search also check out the experience and background that a company has. Usually you can find this information out on their website or with a quick call.

Many times customers will just ask about the price and not about other key issues, and they?ll go with the lowest price they can find. This can help save money right here and now, but it might not last as long as you would hope. Find a company that will walk you through all the parts and prices and don?t be afraid to pay more for better quality.

Call around and talk to different auto repair shops. Ask them about certifications, warranties, rates, and references. Doing all this before you get a car problem will insure that you save money and don?t just run to the first place you See.

Don?t forget to ask them about possible warranty information on labor or parts. You need to know that the company you choose believes in there work and products.

Certifications are also important to know and ask about. You need to know that those that are working on your car have the experience and the education to know what they are doing.

What exactly are spark plugs, what do they do, and why and when do they need to be changed? Here are a few questions that when through my mind when I was told that I needed to have my spark plugs changed. Because I understand not everyone is well versed in the answers to these questions, I’ve put together what I thought was important to know when it comes to spark plugs.

Your spark plugs are an important part of starting your vehicle. In fact, the spark plugs are what delivers the spark to ignite the fuel and engine so that it starts. The details of exactly how your spark plugs are perfectly positioned and timed to work are truly amazing when you understand them fully.

If you want to know when you should change your spark plugs it might be smart to start by opening and reading your vehicles manufacturing manual. This is a great guide to help you maintain your vehicle in the best possible condition. Many people follow this guide to help them know when they need to change their vehicles spark plugs.

It might not be the smartest thing to overuse your spark plugs. It may seem annoying to follow the manual on when exactly to change them but it is the smartest thing to do. You will begin to feel a rough idle or loss of energy and performance the longer you wait to change your spark plugs.

Another reason that you may have to change your spark plugs is that they may be fouled, worn, or suffer from bad wires. In order to find out if it is one of these you might have to watch for firing patterns with each of your cylinders. If you’re like me and have difficulty with this it’s always best to take it into a professional to tell you what they see.

As you continue to use the same spark plugs the electrodes will wear. As this continues and gets worse, your car will have to over work to be able to ignite the spark. Soon, your car won’t be able to produce the firing voltage and your spark plugs will need to be replaced.

If you are having difficulty starting your car, if it cranks but wont turn over, the first thing you want to do is double check your spark plugs. If you find that they are wearing out then it is time to change them. Many people choose to change them themselves, but some still like to bring it in first to a mechanic to make sure that it really is the spark plugs that are the problem.

Spark plugs can also need to be tightened. Be careful with tightening them, and always make sure that you have checked the manufacturers manual for any additional requirements or warnings about spark plugs. If you don’t know how to change your spark plugs it is a very inexpensive service that most local car shops provide.

Tune ups are so important for the preventative maintenance of our vehicle. If you want to make sure that you are taking care of all the needs of your vehicle, a yearly tune up is as important as any other part of your maintenance routine.

A lot of times, if things are going great and seem to be running well, we might think that a tune up isn’t necessary, but it really is the key to maintaining the health of your vehicle. If we want our cars to last longer, we have got to start taking better care of them.

I’ve also heard some people state that they don’t like how a tune up involves changing and replacing certain parts, because if they aren’t broken, why repair them? But really, there are some parts of your car that when not changed frequently can cause a decrease in your engine performance, in addition to other problems that can arise from it.

Professionals recommend that your car should be brought in for a tune up at least once a year. This is really important because they will be able to catch problems early that need repair. In the long run this can actually save you time and money.

To show the importance of a tune up, let me show the cause of and effect that can happen if certain items in your car are not changed frequently. For example, if your air filter isn’t changed the engine will struggle to get the air that it needs to run properly, which can cause dirt buildup and overworking, as well as other problems that can be a chain reaction and end up cost a lot more money than if you had just gone in and gotten a tune up.

You will have to talk to your local professional for what services they offer for their tune ups. Most of them will offer replacing the distributor cap, rotor, the air filter, and the spark plugs. Some may offer more than this so it is smart to ask them what each general tune up that they have will specifically offer you.

When you bring in your car for a tune up ask a lot of questions both before and after about your car. Find out what they will be doing, what they will be changing or what they changed. Also make sure that you’ve asked them specifics on future problems that they see that you might have, etc.

Know the importance of a yearly tune up. Make sure that you are taking care of your car in a way that will help it last as long as it can.
