The master craft of the locksmith is an invaluable service. It was important in the past and is ever more important in the present. Traditionally lock smithing was the art and science of making and ‘defeating’ locks. Today’s lock smithing practice does a great deal more.

In ancient Egypt, the pharaohs of four thousand years ago surprisingly used locks similar to ones in use today. The type of lock found and dated to Egyptian times was a pin tumbler lock system. Locks today use the same methods in some cases for protecting valuables. These days it is best to a good locksmith in Scottsdale .

A locksmith has many duties and can work out of many different venues. They often have storefronts, where people can come to them for crucial services. They are also often a mobile service, meaning that after being contacted they can go to a workplace or job site. They also are often hired by actual institutions, say an executive business with a steady turn-over and many locks that need to be changed often. They can also work with police in investigations; these are called forensic locksmiths. On top of this, they may choose to specialize by working only with cars, or working just with homes and businesses, buildings.

In some cases it is important for a bank or other business dealing in valuables like a museum or art dealer to have a custom made vault. A custom made vault will be one of a kind, and designed by a professional and certified, trustworthy locksmith. Because it is the only one of it’s kind, it can’t be opened with ease by any professional thieves. They will not have had time to work on similar models and will find themselves stumped trying to break into it.

Another task that is often set before someone well versed in lock smithing is that of determining the risk of a situation. They excel in risk assessment, whether it is important documents, jewels or money, anything that someone else might covet and want to take for themselves. While not every locksmith is going to have knowledge of security systems, all good security specialists have lock smithing knowledge or experience. Locksmiths look at a situation and figure out how many layers of protection are required. A difficult multi-layered lock system will not deter thieves forever; however, it will deter thieves under time constraints to look for weaker targets.

Full disclosure is the practice of making sure the public is kept abreast of information, technology or other important industry achievements. This can be in the realm of computers, science or especially in politics. In the eighteen hundreds, full disclosure came under heavy scrutiny, thanks to the field of the locksmith. People wondered if explaining to the public about how certain difficult locks and safes worked, they were in truth making thieves out of innocent people. In turn, others said that true thieves will always know more than the general public could learn from full disclosure. Now of course, the public strives to learn everything it can, as much as it can, about everything.

Although the lock smithing craft is very old, it is continually adding new technologies. A locksmith has to constantly learn new methods and new security measures. Sometimes in modern security and lock smithing practices, computers and other engineering types of technology are added, to help prevent crime and theft. The locksmith is there for us, to keep the thieves at bay.

Epoxy garage floor coatings are all the rage. Long gone are the old browns and grays that used to be associated with any type of garage floor paint. Today’s garage floor finishes are often a shiny red, or sometimes even clear. Any time you see really eye-catching garage floors on TV, if they’re a solid color, or only have flecks of color, then you’re most likely looking at epoxy. Nearly all garage floor coatings nowadays will include the words epoxy, acrylic, and resin, but most people don’t really know what these terms mean. In this article, we’ll take a look at epoxy, what it is, and why it’s used in practically every modern garage floor coating.

What Is Epoxy?

Anyone who has ever glued something together that was never meant to come apart in the first place has probably used either super-glue or epoxy. If you had to mix it, it was probably epoxy. This is because epoxy, by definition, is a mixture of epoxide and polyamine. Once these two chemicals have mixed and cured, they create the rock-hard adhesive or paint that we know of as epoxy. The curing process of epoxy is often varied depending on its application. When it comes to garage flooring, epoxy usually takes hours to cure, whereas in adhesive, it may be mixed so that it will only take minutes.

Is Epoxy The Strongest Of Garage Floor Coatings?

Of all of the various garage flooring options, epoxy is definitely the strongest and most durable. By nature, epoxy resists everything from liquid to UV rays, so you can bet it will also resist any chemicals that come from your car or anything else that ends up in your garage. Because it is so hard, it’s not as comfortable to lay or sit upon as tiles or mats, however, although it is easier on the back and knees than a plain old concrete garage floor.

Comparing Other Garage Floor Coverings To Epoxy

If you take a look at the various garage flooring options, you’ll see some garage floor paint is labeled as water or acrylic based. These are usually also epoxy coatings, and they may or may not be mixed a bit differently with slightly different balances than those garage floor coatings that more clearly show themselves to be epoxy based. For whatever reason, it seems that some companies want to lead consumers away from thinking their products are the same as the other guys, even if they basically are. Notice that the big guys like RustOleum and Quikrete garage floor pretty clearly say that all of their coatings are epoxy.

You Guessed It, Epoxy Is Now The New Future Of Garage Floor Coatings!

Although epoxy paint has been used for some time, it can still deflect even today’s worst, most destructive chemicals. Brake fluid, which is a good example since it is capable of dissolving clothes if left alone, can be sprayed off the epoxy coating as easily as water. There’s probably some horribly destructive chemical that will make its presence known in the cars of the future, but as of know, epoxy can deflect pretty much anything. If you can swing it, the best garage floor coating should continue to be epoxy for some time.

So you’ve narrowed your possible garage flooring options down to a garage floor mat or epoxy paint. Both garage floors have their pros and cons, so we’ll take a look at the ones most likely affecting your decision. Hopefully, by the time you’ve read this article, you’ll have a better understanding of exactly how the two garage floors compare. Note that, for the purposes of this article, we will be comparing epoxy paint to whole garage floor coverings, and not compartment mats. Because compartment garage floor mats are not sold in a package that can cover entire garage floors, they are not really appropriate for comparing to epoxy paint.

Installing Is Easier With A Garage Floor Mat Than Epoxy Garage Floor Paint

This is kind of obvious. Epoxy paint takes hours to install, as well as hours in between steps to dry, while a garage floor mat just requires cutting and placing. Since your garage floor must be immaculate before you even start, it’s a much bigger chore to prepare for epoxy as well. A mat, on the other hand, will rest on top of dirt or dust just as well as anything else. If you need a solution right now, then a garage floor mat may be your only real option.

Garage Floor Mats Are Most Expensive Than Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

Generally speaking, a garage floor mat will probably cost you in the neighborhood of $200, which is about three times the cost of an epoxy garage floor coating kit. The pricing difference makes sense when you really consider what it is you’re buying as opposed to what you’re going to have when everything is said and done. With a garage floor covering, you’re buying the pre-assembled protection while, with epoxy garage floor paint, there is some assembly required. Obviously this figure will change dramatically if you end up paying someone to install your epoxy garage floor coating, so be sure to call around and get some quotes on installation before you make your final decision if you don’t plan to do it yourself. Odds are pretty good that, including installation costs, epoxy will come out quite a bit more expensive than a garage floor mat.

Epoxy Garage Floor Paint Is More Durable Than A Garage Floor Mat

Epoxy has the undeniable advantage in longevity and durability, but it also changes things. Applying an epoxy garage floor coating changes the entire nature of the garage flooring. In comparison, a garage floor mat will just cover it. It’s unlikely but possible for either to become stained or damaged and, when that happens, swapping a mat is far simpler than repairing a paint job. Of course, you’re also out the $200 for the new mat. So before choosing, you should be asking yourself how rough you are likely to be on your garage flooring.

The Verdict?

There’s no way that there could be a clear winner for that would be appropriate for all garage floors. There is a reason that both options are available, and it’s because they both sell, which means they’re both useful to someone. It’s up to you, the buyer, to decide which is best for your particular situation. If money is no object, you can always consider doing both, or possibly using compartment mats on top of an epoxy garage floor coating. Whichever way you go, good luck, and enjoy your new garage flooring!

Installing an epoxy garage floor coating isn’t very hard at all, but it can be trying if you are not of sound body. If you plan to do the install yourself, then your first question should be: will I be able to spend hours bent over? If the answer is no, then you’ll want to either plan to have someone else install your epoxy garage floor coating, or go a different route altogether.

Always Put Your Epoxy Garage Floor Coating Kit’s Directions First!

Assuming you do decide that you want to lay your own epoxy garage floor coating, here is a quick rundown of all the steps you will need to follow. Keep in mind, regardless of what this or any guide on the web says, always follow the directions specific to your epoxy garage floor coating kit. Anything found here or anywhere else should just be considered a rough guide to give you an idea of exactly what it is you will be doing. The last thing any friendly article wants to do is lead you to messing up your garage flooring.

Picking Your Epoxy Garage Floor Coating Kit

Obviously selecting and purchasing your epoxy garage floor coating kit will be your first step. Considering there is virtually no risk of a faulty product or damage from shipping, buying your kit online is a very sound way to save some money. If you have never done anything like this before, you may want to try and get a kit that comes with an instructional DVD so that you can have detailed directions. Keep in mind, there are many kits out there to choose from, and some have quite the array of color options, so don’t settle. Your epoxy garage floor coating is going to be around for quite a while, after all, and you don’t want your garage flooring to be something you are embarrassed of after putting so much work into it.

Preparing Your Garage For The Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

After you’ve got your kit in hand, it’s time to clean the concrete garage floor. Most epoxy garage floor coating kits can be installed over the top of an existing coat, if one exists. Again, refer to the instructions for your kit. If that’s not an option, or if your existing paint is damaged, sanding down to the concrete garage floor might be a better idea.

Applying The Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

Most kits start their instructions with mixing. Once you have cleaned your concrete garage floor, that will probably be the next step. Again, follow the directions, or you can easily mess up the entire process. The instructions are generally quite easy to follow, but you do have to pay attention. Take the time to read them a few times before you even start; it’s worth it. Once the epoxy part is down, you’ll be applying the color flakes, should you choose to use them and your kit have them. Although they are far from necessary, they do add a bit of random color. After all of this has dried, the next step is the top layer, or the paint itself. After that, if you’ve done everything right, your garage floors should be nice and shiny!

Check out Sweet Garage Floor for more information on installing an epoxy garage floor coating.

by Nick Halmond

Are you aware that every air compressor cannot be used for every kind of job? Air compressors differ both in power level and in size. If you want to get an estimate what kind of air compressor you’ll need, first check the air tool that you’re using for its power requirements. After that, all you need to do is pick a compressor that’s a bit more powerful than you think you need. That way, if you want to you can later buy an air tool that requires a slightly higher level of power.

For example, one common air tool is the rotary screw compressor. When looking for a rotary screw compressor, you are faced with an array of choices. If you want a powerful screw compressor, don’t choose a cheap one. Those are only good for occasionally pumping up your tires with air.

Air compressors are sometimes rated by horsepower or hp. Dont be swayed by the hp listing. It all depends on how much power it draws. Often the hp listed is inflated.

A better value to look at is the PSI. This means pounds per square inch. Most air tools need 90 PSI to function. But if the compressor has a listing of 125 to 135 PSI, it will not be able to properly run the 90 PSI air tool. This is because what the PSI is really measuring is shut off pressure, and that value does not account when there is a loss of pressure in the line. If you want to get the best efficiency from your 90 PSI tool, think about a compressor that has two-stage pressure shut off. The first stage will shut off at 90 PSI, and the second stage will wait until 175 PSI to shut off.

Next you will take into account the “cubic feet per minute” or CFM. The majority of air tools manufactured today will require 4 to 6 CFM. Not a big deal here, since at 90 PSI you will be getting 3 to 4 exact horsepower. CFM merely tells you how much air is being moved.

Tank size on a compressor may be important to you depending on how you wish to use your air compressor. If your work requires you to use it in short bursts, then the typical 30-gallon tank and a normal pump and motor is more than fine. If however, you wish to use it heavily, you would do better with a bigger tank and much stronger pump and motor, taking into consideration air that is stored in the tank.

Because of this you may see professional contractors running multiple air tools at the same time, with the knowledge that using a compressor with a rating of 150 PSI is a better choice for long-term continual use.

Truck mounted compressors differ from portable ones because they use the truck itself as a source of power. Of course a problem with this is a fact that the truck has to keep running to keep the compressor going. If you need to keep the compressor in use for long periods of time, the best choice is a compressor that is deck mounted. Deck mounted compressors are similar to truck mounted ones in that they sit on removable beds for the truck. This makes it feasible to let the compressor stay at the worksite instead of forcing you to lug it every day.

There are gas powered and electrically powered compressors. If you are apt to work in an area without having electricity its imperative that you choose a gas powered one.
